I did extensive research on this a few months ago when dh had shingles,
it is the same virus, but it lies dormant in the dorsal column, once you
have had chickenpox; something triggers it, suggestions include stress,
and because you have had the virus already it develops into shingles:
Whilst the blisters are forming you can pass on the virus, but only to
people who have never had chickenpox,and they develop chickenpox not
shingles. Shingles isn't contagious as such.
