Could be implantation bleeding, could be just "breakthrough bleeding." They called it that (whether or not I was on the pill) when I used to bleed (dark brown, tissue-y rather than the usual red) in between my cycles, which are usually very regular. My doc pointed out that it was happening when I was stressed out, and explained that sometimes the body responds to stress with elevated hormones and it can result in between-cycle bleeding.
