Re: AFP VERY LOW AND U/S OK, AMNIOCENTESISFrom: Abbey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Jan 2002 12:42:17 -0600 (CST)
I am not an MD- just another pregnant woman who went through a similar decision-making process a few weeks ago. As you probably know, the procedure of amniocentesis carries a 1/200 chance of causing miscarriage. The bottom line is this: what would you do if the baby did have Down syndrome? If you think you would terminate the pregnancy because the baby has Down's, it makes sense to get the amnio and find out, especially since your risk of having Down's (1/10) is higher than that of loss from the procedure. However, if you would keep the baby regardless, you may not want to run the risk of losing the pregnancy. Our triple screen results weren't as high as yours, but my husband and I opted against amnio after much careful deliberation and many ultrasounds. The fact that your targeted ultrasound was normal is certainly a good sign, but you still have a much higher than average chance of having a baby with Down syndrome. Only an amnio could tell you for certain whether or not the baby has Down's. It's a tough decision and ultimately one only you and your wife can make. Good luck to both of you, whatever you decide.
