implantation bleeding

My boyfriend and I are not ttc, but aren't trying not to, either. My period was 6 days late, and now into the 4th day of my period, I'm not sure if it really is one. Before I was supposed to start, I had bloating, heartburn, gas, and major breast tenderness - none of which usually occur before my period. These have all continued. On the 22nd of Jan. I had horrible cramps (I had to sit down in a store it hurt so badly), and started bleeding shortly after I got home. The bleeding has been moderate at most, brown, and patchy. My periods have been like clockwork - 28-day cycles, mild cramping, very heavy bleeding - for two years now. On the 23rd, I barely needed a panty liner; I barely went through a tampon yesterday (the 24th), had no bleeding last night, and none so far today.

I took a hpt on the 17th (the day after I should have started my period), and it came back neg. I've also read almost every archive on implantation bleeding and bleeding during early pregnancy, but the answers are confusing at best. I understand there are no absolutes when it comes to all this, but if I am pg, I need to know to stop smoking and drinking. I do both in moderation, but wouldn't want to harm our unborn if there is one. Any comments or suggestions would be helpful.
