Re: Can't Find Heartbeat

Hey there!! Is the doc using an ultrasound or a handheld doppler (like a microphone?) The heartbeat can't be reliably detected using a hand-held doppler until AT LEAST 10 weeks, and usually 12-13. If you had a transvaginal u/s now the tech should be able to see it, but it is impossible to hear it now using just a handheld dopplar. If you have not already had one, ask the doc to do an ultrasound to make sure that the heart is beating, but don't expect to be able to hear it for another month or so. If you have been having ultrasounds, it is possible that your dates are off - docs base the length of your pregnancy on a standard set of averages, and most of us fall outside those averages - meaning that your wife could have ovulated later than what the doctor is assuming.

Good luck! - Amanda
