Re: Prodromal Labor?From: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 17 Jan 2002 16:12:54 -0600 (CST)
I have read quite recently that even as little as 1-2 weeks prematurity (prior to 37 weeks) can compromise infant and child development through age 4. I have to side with Jessica on this - in my admittedly non-professional opinion I'm at a loss to understand why you are trying to rush labor when you are considered pre-term? Your midwife may have her own standards but I have been told through my pregnancies and through all the literature I have read, as well as the docs responses on this board, that anything prior to 37 weeks is considered premature. In fact, I believe the two spikes in lung development occur at 28 weeks and 36 weeks. So to try to induce yourself without any indication that your baby's lungs are ready seems to be ill-considered. The only outcome that matters is a healthy baby upon delivery - so why rush things?? 38 and 39 weeks are neither early nor concerning, but 36 weeks is. Why would you take even the slightest risk of compromising your child this way? No doubt you will find my words unkind as well, but if your baby is truly "ready" to be born than you can count on your labor to progress on its own, without you downing huge amounts of herbs that can in and of themselves be potentially dangerous. Think of your baby's health and not your own "schedule." Just my thoughts.
