Re: 'not a good ride', he saidFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 10 Jan 2002 21:23:47 -0600 (CST)
Thank you for your concern, Joy. Elise's condition simply means she had too many red blood cells, and her blood was too thick. They couldn't even get a blood sample!! Her blood was thick as mollasses and her heart [being a muscle] got really big from pumping that thick blood. It took up a great deal of her chest cavity. They took out some of her blood from her umbilicus and replaced it with saline solution to thin out her blood. After three days, her body began thinning the blood itself but the result was high billirubin [jaundice] as the red blood cells broke down. I have no idea why, but her blood sugar levels was WAY low and they said it was from this condition. I'd sure like to know why. I didn't sleep the night before my inducition, then vomited my whole labor, then didn't sleep all night after her birth because she was having those problems. It was a living nightmare to see my baby taken away in a huge inubator ambulance gurney and be taken 45 miles away from me to go to a special children's hospital. I begged my O.B. to let me go and be with her even though I was so exhausted from not sleeping for 48 hours AND giving birth. I was running on adrenaline. I had no idea what was wrong with her and thought she might die. I thank the Lord that she is okay and is growing well [an ounce per day!!]. She is sooooooo beautiful and she is such a joy to us. I love holding her and nursing her - I feel like I could burst with love. I'm so in love with this little gal. Love, Kristy B.
