A D&C stands for dilation in curettage, and if performed for an abortion this is the procedure before 14 weeks. A D&E stance for dilation and evacuation, often includes a curettage. Both have the same risk for scarring. Symptoms for scarring of the uterus is abscess or diminished menses, or infertility. This can occur even in the absence of complications.
