Usually there is a problem with the placenta function, which causes first low amniotic fluid, then second and more severely, intra-uterine growth retardation (search for IUGR in the archives). This can be caused by a number of things like high blood pressure, smoking, aging placenta, postdates, etc. At any rate, at 5 lbs 13 oz, it isn't likely that she suffered anything serious since that is still in the normal range for full term infants.

I'm not a doctor, but know all this from personal experience with my hypertension and high risk pregnancies.
