To Anon (Mom/Midwife) Re: Vulvodynia and Pregnancy/Delivery -- Clarification to 2nd QuestionFrom: Meredith (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 31 Dec 2001 23:35:49 -0600 (CST)
Hi ~ I appreciate your response but I am not certain that the gist of my concern was clear. I am educated about the various sensations when delivering from a factual standpoint (this is just my 1st child) and do not have a fear of "the ring of fire" nor have I spent a great deal of time worrying about vaginal pain at delivery. I only learned of the condition vulvodynia yesterday, and until that point was simply under the impression that I had constant yeast and BV infections. (That might in fact still be the case, since I haven't talked to my own dr yet, but I sure seem to match the vulvodynia profile!) Neither yeast nor BV would normally cause a severe inflammation... but vulvodynia may well since it is defined as such a chronic inflammation. My question was simply whether such an inflammation could cause excessive, unusual problems (yes, unusual extremes of pain, but also actual swelling that could interfere with delivery, such as when the cervix swells from incorrect pushing) at the specific site where vulvodynia occurs, which is only in the lower section and outlet of the vagina. It had nothing to do with fear of normal childbirth sensation. My more long-lasting concerns have more to do with whether I will ever have intercourse, use a tampon, or have a vaginal exam again without burning and pain as I have experienced lately. Since I had 10 years of sexual activity and gynecological exams without any pain, and have only had about 2.5 years with a building degree of pain after my infections began, I know that it is a medical problem that should have a solution. Hope that clarifies the issue as related to a specific physical condition I may have rather than an anxiety about normal childbirth sensation. If all this was clear, please disregard my post, but since vulvodynia is not really a well-known disorder, I think it's important to clarify what my medical concern was. Thanks, Meredith
