Some thoughts as a mom and as a midwife...

I understand your concern, however, the fact that during the second stage, pushing there are so many more physical sensations besides vaginal ones. There is the urge to push, the general fullness--BEFORE the baby is actually at the vaginal outlet. There is the intensity of the contractions that have changed in nature from those that dilate to those that expell. Most women (even those who have fears similar to yours) find that the overall experience with all of the physical sensations are such that although the burning and pressure of crowning are present, they are just one small facet of the overall experience. Like...trying to feel the pain of a stubbed toes...when on a rollercoaster! This doesnt even take into play all of the adrenaline, hormones and general preparation your body goes through to birth a baby.

Also, the term "ring of fire" may be descriptive but I feel it is unduly dramatic and may add aprehension to the experience which may make many women tense up. Try this...put a finger in each "corner" of yor mouth, right at your lips. Now streeeeetch your mouth open as far as you can with your fingers. Feel the burning? That is similar to what happens, similar to what happens ANYTIME tissues are stretched beyond what they normally would do.

HTH...sorry you are so worried about this. I am sure it is making the prospect of giving birth more anxiety provoking than it needs to be. I hope you come to a resolution of your anxiety soon.
