Contractions caused by sleeping on side?

Hi, I'm 27wks preg. Recently when I sleep on my sides I experience sharp pains in my uterus and back. When I flip to my back my uterus is like a hard ball. After remaining on my back for a minute the ball relaxes and the pain subsides. This happens everytime I lay on my sides now.

I've been told it's not safe to sleep on your back during the 3rd trimester.

2 questions: 1. Do you know if these are contractions that I am experiencing from laying on my side and 2. should I sleep on my back or continue to sleep on my sides?

Thanks for any advice.
