Re: Birth defects from infertilityFrom: Joy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 27 Dec 2001 10:05:49 -0500
One thing I do is try to stay away from media when I am either ttc or pregnant. It only seems to instill fear that otherwise would not be there. I (as many on this forum know) struggled with infertility for years. After about three years I conceived and had a normal, uncomplicated pregnancy and now I have a happy, healthy 14 month old little boy. I have many friends who have, too, struggled with infertility and some went on clomid, as well. They, too have healthy children. I also have friends that have had miscarriages and they went on to have healthy pregnancies and children. I also have friends that have conceived relatively easy within a couple of months or so and they struggled with preterm labors, or preeclampsia, iugr, and even birth defects. So, one cannot tell by infertility or not whether birth defects will come. I really don't think there are any clear cut ways to determine who will be hit and who will not. Yes, genetic abnormalities can result in birth defects but genetic abnormalties do not necessarily result in infertility. Nor does infertility cause genetic abnormalities. Stay away from the media, if you can. Stress alone can cause infertility. And as far as the sperm count goes, some men may have sperm counts that rise and fall with sickness, heat, nutrition, etc..so there would definitely have to be study after study after study done to prove that theory that was written in the article to be valid and reliable information. Best wishes, Joy
