birth canal transmissions of std

Hi

I was wondering to what degree is the transmission of std via the birth canal a problem today? Is C section always the preferred method to avoid std transmission in these cases? Which std's are transmitted in this way? And does the transmission occur when the baby comes into contact with the vaginal canal or does it happen as soon as the mucus plug comes out and the membranes rupture?

thanks!
