Hi - I am not a doc but I noticed you had not gotten a response and thought I'd pass on what I've been told...apparently, the cervix extends past the end of the vaginal canal - therefore you can't feel the whole thing with your fingers. I read recently that the yardstick measurement is something like 2.5 cm at 16 weeks gestation - but again you can't tell this from a manual exam. Manual exams can really only check for dialation, but I've read on this forum that when pg we should not be touching our cervixes all that much anyway, because of the risk of infection. Also, apparently, the risk of an incompentent cervix is very very small in the general population. I'll check back to see what a doc says, but again, this is just what I've gleaned.

Good luck to you!
