Lisa, There are three issues that play into a prolonged second stage. These are the size of the baby, the size of your pelvis and the strength of the uterine contractions. Any one of these or a combination thereof can interplay in creating a prolonged second stage. You obviously can't change the size issue so the only thing one can impact is the intensity of the uterine contractions along with facilitating the delivery with forceps or vacuum... Lynn
