Re: 42 weeks and still no labour...continuedFrom: Meredith (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 27 Nov 2001 00:26:49 -0600 (CST)
Nancy, I am glad that I am not the only one who disagrees this "OB-God" depiction. Patients must take responsibility for their part in medical discussions and decisions. The doctor is not the root problem, nor should the doctor should be the only solution to problems in doctor-patient communication and medical decision-making. There are many issues -- demanding patients, passsive patients, rigid insurance standards, litigiousness, and lack of communication are key. There shouldn't be personal judgement on patients who choose differently than one would, or on doctors who suggest procedures. Some decisions may be "bad" but many are simply different. I am birthing naturally in a hospital with a doula, but I am open to post-term induction and to emergency interventions if genuine need arises. This does not make me uninformed, uninvolved, irresponsible, or anything else -- I know my history, my family's history, and the effects of most complications and medications. I do have dialogue with my doctors and have refused procedures, so I know it can be done and on occasion should be done. Thank you for being more rational and detailed than my response was. Best of health to you and your baby!
-- Meredith
