To DEBBIE!!! Re: Morning Sickness the causes and when will it end!!!!From: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 26 Nov 2001 00:07:46 -0600 (CST)
Debbie, Take it from me! You're gonna hear lots of (well - intentioned) advice on this one. If the advice doesn't help or leaves you wondering, "DOES ANYONE OUT THERE REALLY UNDERSTAND??" Let me tell you that I do. I have been struggling with severe sickness since my 6th week. I'm now in week 16. I have done the homemade Benedictin (B6 and unisom) and the promethazine and the zofran tablets. Nothing was really helping. I'm 23 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight. I've been in the hospital for rehydration. Now I'm on a zofran pump, which pumps into my leg 24 hours a day (subcutaneous - not IV - and allows me to work. First thing: Find a doctor that understands. I waited too long to do that and got much worse than I should have! Second: Ask about zofran or the zofran pump. This is very expensive. The zofran tabs run $15 a piece in Ohio and the pump is about $24,000 a month. (I hope you have good insurance) Third: Crazy as it sounds, getting food into that horribly upset stomach may even be more important than fluids. You are probably burning your own fat and muscle, have ketones in your urine, and are getting sicker and sicker. I was told NOT to drink water because I need as many calories as possible. Force yourself to eat. BUT EAT carbohydrates. (mashed potatoes, bread, chips, pretzles, bagels, etc) Proteins (like meat and especially dairy) digest slowly and will make you feel sicker. Don't freak right now about your kid's health. They will get what they need from your body. Fourth: I said it already, but DO find a doctor who understands. After being ignored by my family doctor, I FINALLY switched to an OB/GYN and got some real relief. I am still nauseated quite a bit, but the vomiting has reduced from 5-6 times a day to once every week or so. Let me know how you do. It is not normal to be really really sick. It took a couple of coworkers and a trip to the hospital to convince me of that. Ann V.
