Actually Valtrex is a category B medication, which is converted to acyclovir through metabolism in the body. There was an acyclovir registry, which registered all women who took acyclovir during pregnancy, and there were no adverse findings. Life is a risk-benefit ratio, and you must decide whether it is more important for you to be on a medication, which has been shown to be relatively safe in pregnancy, and may obviate your need for a cesarean section, versus the risk of exposing your unborn baby to genital herpes, and thus the risk of blindness, pneumonia, systemic infection.

Here's a personal bone I have to pick: you're going to an obstetrician who you trust, not only with your life but the life of your unborn fetus. This physician makes a recommendation, based on evidence based medicine, in order to protect you from unnecessary surgery. You have a secondhand conversation with the pediatrician, and now you distrust your obstetrician. Either you need to keep trusting your obstetrician, or you need to find another obstetrician that satisfies you, and relieves your anxiety. But if you had so little faith in your obstetrician why did continue going to this person? If you have believe and have faith in your obstetrician, why at 36 weeks due you not trust this physician?

I think those questions you need to answer prior to taking the Valtrex. When to determine whom you can trust and have faith in, it will make the rest of your pregnancy easier.
