A further question on Valtrex and pregnancyFrom: NK (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 24 Nov 2001 10:03:44 -0600 (CST)
Thanks Dr. Lynn for your reply. I have couple more questions. I understand that valtrex is used for women with a history of herpes in the last few of pregnancy. As suppressive therapy. I am 36 weeks tomorrow and had an outbreak early this week. My doctor has prescribed Valtrex until the end. I happened to be at my daughters pediatricians yesterday and he scared me again when I asked about Valtrex. It is a Category C drug and from what he could tell it was classified Category C because it has shown that it can cause birth defects in animal fetuses. THere are no thorough studies yet on humans. How do I factor this into my decision? I keep thinking DES where the effects of that drug were not seen for years. Is that kind of thing possible? Secondly he said if I didn't take though I was commiting myself to a C-section, since after an outbreak we shed cells for up to a month. Is this true? (By the way never took anything with my daughter although did not have an outbreak this late in pregnancy. I do not see my OB for another week. I have the prescription but completely flummoxed as whether to take or not. Sorry for the length and thank you for your opinions and advice. NK
