Minimum Requirements For Prenatal Vitamins

Dear Doctors,

My husband and I are planning on trying to conceive soon. I know that I should start on prenatal vitamins now, and that folic acid is very important. But every prenatal vitamin seems to have different levels of different vitamins and minerals. For example, one says it has 2500 IU of vitamin A because Vitamin A is not good for pregnant women. Another says Vitamin A is so bad, that it has No Vitamin A at all. Also, these prenatal vitamins don't seem to have all the vitamins/minerals found in regular multi-vitamins such as Vitamins B1, B2, B12, Phosphorus, Iodine, etc.

What exactly should I look for in a prenatal vitamin and what should I avoid in a prenatal vitamin?

Your answers are greatly appreciated.

Regards, Mari
