gestational diabetes in second pregnancy - earlier

I had gestational diabetes in my first pregnancy. Because my mom had 5 8.5lb+ babies, my dr decided to test me early (18 weeks) and I passed with flying colors. At 26 weeks I just barely made the cutoff, both on the 1-hour and 3-hour tests. It did progress, however, and I was on insulin when pregnant with my son.

This time I was diagnosed with quite miserable numbers at 18 weeks.

What caused it to show up earlier this time? If it is strictly related to placenta size & the hormones it produces shouldn't it start about the same time? Is it common for it to begin earlier with subsequent pregnancies?
