How old is old blood?

I have a question about spotting. I am 7 weeks pregnant and had a visit with my OB yesterday. A few hours after the appointment I had a few drops of pink blood on the toilet paper after I went to the bathroom, and have been having a slight bit of brown spotting ever since. I called the office today to get the results of my blood test, and I mentioned the spotting. They said it was old blood and should be fine unless it continues for a while.

I've also seen mention of "old blood" on this forum. My question is, how old does blood have to be to show up brown? Would it be brown just a few hours after my appointment if it was caused by the doctor hitting my cervix during the exam? I had a previous miscarriage that started with brown spotting, so I am extremely nervous this time around.

Thank you!
