Is 'pelvic rest' really useful?From: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 17 Oct 2001 16:35:05 -0500 (CDT)
Hello, I am 12 weeks pregnant today, and have been on "pelvic rest" almost continuously since 7 weeks. I had some very faint brown spotting at 7 weeks after sex, and again at 9 weeks (also after sex - we "cheated!"). Both times, an u/s showed an apparently normal and appropriately sized fetus with a h/r of 150 at 7 weeks and 175 at 9 weeks, and my cervix has remained long and closed. My initial pap smear was indeterminately abnormal at my 5 week appointment, so the speculation is just that sex irritates it. My midwife told me to remain on pelvic rest until she sees me again to check for a h/b on October 29. She couldn't locate one with the doppler at 11 weeks (although she thought she heard it for a second or two), and said even before she tried that sometimes she can and sometimes she can't at that point. I have a retroverted uterus and am slightly overweight, so she reiterated that everything else seemed fine - size of uterus, symptoms etc. Anyway, long story short, the morning sickness of my 1st trimester seems to be passing, and my S.O. and I are feeling a little "deprived." Will pelvic rest really help prevent a miscarriage? And, when do the first trimester risks of miscarriage drop - I've heard conflicting info ranging from 12-14 weeks. Are my chances still as high as they were say at 6 weeks? Thanks so much,
-- Amanda Edd 4/30
