Re: when is it too late for an epidural

Jenny: With my first, I dilated pretty quickly and had no real need for an epidural UNTIL the doc gave me pitocin. My daughter seemed to be hanging on like a cat with claws high up in my uterus. Of course, no matter what these male docs say -- pitocin is NASTY. The contractions one on top of each other are unbelievable. That's when I demanded an epidural. I was at 7 cm. My doc hemmed and hawed and finally said I could have the fentanyl (sp?) portion of the epidural. Through gritted teeth I said give me SOMETHING!!! It helped a great deal. My daughter shot down and was born 3 hours later. I learned recently at my lamaze refresher that 7 cm is the cutoff for epidurals. At 37 weeks now -- I know to ask for it about 5 cm -- whether I need it or not!!!! And especially if pitocin is again in the picture.
