Re: To all ladies who have had a normal or 'walking' epiduralFrom: Jenny (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 5 Oct 2001 17:46:16 -0500 (CDT)
I was given Pitocin after my water broke and contractions had not begun on their own. I went about 5 hours and then had Nubain and then about an 1 1/2 hours after that I was finally allowed to have an epidural because I finally got to 4 cm. After the epidural, I went from 4 to 10 cm in less than 2 hours. I really felt absolutely nothing during the time I had the epidural. At one point, it started to "wear off" because I started to feel some slight crampiness but they increased the dose and in 30 min the baby's head had crowned all on its own. I pushed for about 10 or 15 min, mind you I had no feeling in my vaginal area whatsoever. I had no feelings of pressure to tell me it was time to push. The only way that we knew that baby was crowned was because the nurse went to drain my bladder and check my cervix and said "oh my, there's the head." When I was pushing, it was all instinct; I am amazed that I could figure out which muscles to use when I could not feel anything. It was actually a pretty great birth experience. The only pain was from the contractions I had before the epidural and I only had a very, very small tear. Good luck. jla > >--
