Hello Jana,

I too applaud your concern for the health of your baby. As someone who has stopped wellbutrin b/c of this pregnancy (after being in a psych hospital a year ago) I understand the difficulty of balancing your needs with that of the baby inside of you. Clearly, you aware of the dangers of smoking while pregnant (or even when not pg, for that matter!) and I don't think there is a doctor alive who would or should council that you continue smoking. OK? So yeah, if it's humanly possible, quit for your own sake as well as your baby's.

But, I want to remind you that our mothers' and grandmothers' generations smoked during their pregnancies - my mother smoked AND drank - and for a while smoking was even recommended as way to prevent excess weight gain during pg. Unfortunate, but true. Yes, smoking can cause harm to your baby, but it is also possible to have a normal baby. So, don't add guilt to the other burdens you are carrying now. Take it slowly and deliberatelty, and remember that every cigarette you don't smoke - now and after birth - is a gift to your baby and yourself. You are in control here, and you have the power to bestow an incredible gift upon the two of you - a life free of the dangers of cigarettes and second-hand smoke. You are not a bad mother, or a bad person because you are dealing with this. You are, as someone else pointed out, obviously a loving and informed mother who is investing a lot in prenatal care. I wish I had some great advice on quitting (hypnosis? Twizzlers? :) ), but I've only smoked socially. All I can tell you is that I'm proud of you for asking, and I think if you've got the strength to WANT to quit you will also find that you have the strength to SUCCEED in quitting. Good luck to you and your baby.
