Can massage cause a miscarriage???From: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 3 Oct 2001 16:12:00 -0500 (CDT)
Hello, I am 10 weeks pregnant (LMP). I have had two instances of light brown spotting - on toilet paper only, and only for 2-3 trips to the bathroom - at 7 weeks and 9 weeks. Both times, an u/s showed an apparently normal fetus with a good heartrate (150 at 7 weeks and 175 at 9 weeks). My midwife told me that my first pap was abnormal, and that there is most likely some irritation of the cervix that caused the spotting (which happened both times after intercourse). Long story short, she feels my pregnancy is very normal, and suggested I get massages to help ease a lower backache that is probably caused by my retroverted uterus. When I called to make an appointment at the spa, I was told that massage releases toxins that could cause a miscarriage, and that since I am still in the 1st trimester I will need a note from the midwife. Is this true? Could massage cause a miscarriage in the 1st trimester? What are the odds of miscarrying when a scan at 9 weeks showed a good fetus and all my symptoms are all present? Yikes! Like pregnant women need one more thing to obsess about! Thanks so much
-- Amanda
