Heather,

The last poster is correct regarding how low the chances are of there being a defect with your child. The "all or nothing" phenomenon probably covers half the time you are speaking of. I too had to be counseled about that, for reasons enumerated below. Talk about your history and options with an OB, because many defects can be found with ultrasound and amniocentesis. Not all, of course, but many.

I was terrified when I found out I was pregnant, because I'd undergone a radioactive dye scan and lots of meds right after conception for a biliary problem. My blood pregnancy test did not yet show pg positive, but I couldn't have conceived any later. Then at 12 weeks I had to undergo another radioactive scan for suspected pulmonary embolism, and at 14 weeks the place where I lived had the water contaminated with petroleum-based lubricating fluid!

This is a horrible case history of possible teratogens that I could not avoid, but my baby appears to be fine at 22 weeks. He started moving right on time, his size is right on target for my due date, and Level 2 ultrasound and AFP tests are totally normal. Now he kicks and somersaults up a storm and I know he's doing fine.

Just wanted you to know another story where things are working out just fine. Just my opinion, but I would go slow making a decision on this one -- at least, I'd recommend that you request an amniocentesis if you are very worried, because they can be done early enough in your pregnancy that you still have the time to consider your options after reviewing the report.
