Quite like yourself,on 5 occasions I drank heavily before knowing that I was pregnant.I was away in the carribean on vacation and got a bit crazy with the alcohol. Luckily, I found out very early (13 days past conception) and completely stopped drinking. I was a nervous wreck thinking of the damamge I could have caused the baby. I spent endless hours worrying and trying to find information on the internet. I too had convinced myself that the baby must have fetal alcohol sydrome or fetal alcohol effects and was seriuosly thinking about aborting the pregnancy. After I spoke with several doctors about this, they basically said that while of course there are no guarantees (as with anything else), the chance that I did any harm to the baby is so low they wouldn't worry about it at all. The 2 reasons that I was given is that from 7-12 days past conception there isn't any vascular connection between the mother and the baby, and the second reason is the all or none phenomenon which basicaly states that in early pregnancy any assault to the pregnancy will either have an all effect ( a miscarriage) or none at all( a healthy outcome). I am currently 28 weeks pregnant and I had both an amniocentecisis and a level II ultrasound and the baby appears to be healthy. I have to admit every once in a while I still worry, but for the most part I truly believe that the baby will be born healthy.I also have to say that I talked with quite a few number of women who had been through similar circumstances, and gave birth to normal healthy children. Before doing anything drastic, and completely beating yourself up, please talk to your OB-GYN about this. If you do a search on this site you can find info. on the all or none phenomenon and there are a few postings on alcohol consumtion as well. The best of luck to you!I know where you are coming from! Please post back to let us know how it worked out for you. >
