Re: breastfeeding help!!!From: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 21 Sep 2001 16:10:17 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, Jennifer! Congrats on your resolve to breastfeed your daughter. It isn't always easy for everyone, and I applaud your resolve to hang in there. I had many of the same problems when I first began breastfeeding. I eliminated dairy products from my diet for about 6 weeks, and it seemed to help my daughter's colic. My doctor couldn't give me any firm evidence that this was causing her to scream for hours on end, but I did find that it helped. After about 6 weeks, I slowly began reintroducing dairy into my diet, saving drinking milk for last. Their digestive systems do eventually mature to where it's not a problem, but it can be difficult at first. I had the hyper letdown, too. You could just barely put pressure on my breast in the beginning, and milk would spray out. It's hard at first, but you'll appreciate a good, strong letdown in a few months when you can finish a feeding in about 10 minutes when other mother's take 20-30 minutes. And you are truly blessed to have such a great supply, that will make it easier to keep going. But it doesn't help for now when you're faced with a colicky baby and sleep deprived. I was able to use use a modified football hold to feed my daughter with several pillows propped up behind her back. The goal was to have her in almost a sitting position when she ate so she wouldn't choke as much. Plus, my lactation nurse told me to nurse her on one breast only for 4 hours to make sure she emptied it out and got more hindmilk. It seemed to help. I hope this helps, and feel free to write back for encouragement. YOU'RE DOING GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! GIVE YOURSELF A BIG HUG FOR ALL YOU'RE DOING FOR YOUR DAUGHTER!!!!!!!!!!! Amy (who's been breastfeeding for 8 months and still going strong)
