At my 6 week postpartum check up yesterday my OB/GYN prescribed ACLOVATE (alclometasone dipropionate ointment .05%) for what he thinks is eczema on my hand. I asked if it was safe while I breastfeed my daughter and he claimed it should be. However, when I read the information from the pharmacy it states the following for nursing mothers: Systemically administered corticosteroids appear in human breast milk and could suppress growth, interfere with endogenous corticosteroid production, or cause other untoward effects. It is not known whether topical administration of topical corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when ACLOVATE ointment is administered to a nursing woman. That said, do you consider it safe to use? I would need to apply a thin layer to my thumb and forefinger of one hand. Thank you for any information!
