In general, if one has hCG present they will be pregnant or have very recently been pregnant. There are some other things that very rarely produce hCG. If there is a certain concentration of hCG in the urine, they will cause a certain chemical reaction to occur and make a (-) into a (+) or an empty area develop a spot or whatever. A faint line may mean that there is a borderline level. If this is the case, it should be come a fairly OVIOUS line within 2 days, because with a normal pregnancy the level will double every 2 days at this stage.
