question about hpts-to anyone

I have heard people say that sometimes when they test too early they will get a negative home pregnancy test, but then tested later and had a positive one. I am curious because I have also heard people say they have tested and had a positive test with a very faint line. Do all false negatives have some type of very faint line or can there be nothing there but the control line?

Thanks.
