Re: Induction and VBACFrom: Nora (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 31 Aug 2001 14:50:31 -0500 (CDT)
Mona, I am sympathetic to your concerns and urge to do what you think right for yourself and your baby. I imagine you are looking forward to a natural, spontaneous birth after your previous experiences. My former OB with my first child (I am now seeing a midwife for my current pregnancy) attempted inducing labor two days after my estimated due date (and it was quite estimated.) Oddly, and I didn't know this could happen, the inducement with pitocin didn't work and my daughter stayed in utero for almost two more weeks at which point I went into spontaneous labor and delivered a 7lb, 8oz baby girl, hardly "over-cooked." The practice of obstetrics can often be a joy to many doctors and just another job to others. It is more than unfortunate to be made to feel like an inconvience. I now have a better understanding of the naturalness in delivering children and should there be no medical problems then labor is not a medical procedure. And it is certainly not your responsibility or obligation to produce a baby on someone else's right day. If you are delivering in a hospital (which it sounds like you are), perhaps you can inquire about the other doctors on call, which practices they work with (does your doctor work with other doctors in the office?) Does the hospital have a staffed midwife? Perhaps, if your doctor is not completely unreasonable you could ask him/her for a referal? Perhpaps you need to say you will not allow for an inducement so what options does he reccommend? When I went into labor my particular doctor was called in and didn't even make it in time- another had helped me deliver! Best of luck to you. -Nora
