Dr. Braun: your opinion on pre-natals?

Dear Dr. Braun,

I just read a recent response of yours, and have a further question. I bought pre-natals when I got a pos. pregnancy test. Then I miscarried (very early), I'm still taking the pre-natals because we are still trying to conceive.

I also have a bottle of 400 mcg. folic acid (not taking them now that I have the pre-nate's). Assuming a healthy diet, can I quit the pre-natals and stick to just the folic acid? Is that okay during pregnancy as well? My husband and I eat very little meat, so my only real dietary concern is getting enough protein (which I won't get from vitamins anyway).

But, if we eat a variety of fruits, veggies, grains and legumes, and I take folic acid supplements is that enough for a healthy pregnancy? I mean, I do dread all the extra iron of the pre-natals (well, really it's the constipation I dread), and if I could have equally as healthy a pregnancy without the vitamins, I'd rather get them from my diet anyway...

Curious as to your thoughts... Judi
