Re: Cool it, Dr. Braun...please

Gee, I was reading Dr. Braun's replies and finding it nice to hear from a doctor with a sense of humor. With email, it's hard to interpret the tone someone is trying to convey. Keeping your sense of humor during pregnancy will keep you sane as your body spirals through all the changes.

I almost responded to your post about eating earlier. I thought the no eating/drinking rule was ridiculous when I went into the hospital. I went in in the middle of the afternoon in very early labor. They decided to induce with Pitocin since I was 10 days overdue. I argued long and hard with the nurse, saying I'd be glad to let them induce me if I could have something to eat first. I knew the baby wouldn't come till the wee hours of the morning and was starving. They refused to allow me food, and I was spitting mad. When my husband brought his supper in, I begged for a few french fries.

Around 1:00 a.m, I had an amniotic fluid embolism right after my water broke and had to be rushed in for emergency c-section. When I was in a cardiac recovery room after the surgery and they were frantically giving me blood transfusions b/c I'd lost almost 3 liters of blood, I vomited (while on a ventilator) and got some in my lungs. It was incredibly uncomfortable, and I couldn't talk to tell anyone what was wrong. My lungs weren't suctioned out until several hours later.

Yes, what happened to me was extremely rare, and chances are most women won't experience anything like that. But, up until that point, I'd had the most routine of pregnancies. Your chances of being the rare exception are minimal, but there's no way of predicting who it can happen to. I'd also begged my husband for a home birth, and we had some heated battles over it b/c he wouldn't go for it. I shudder to think of the consequences if he'd gone along with me, and I cringe when I hear anyone talking about wanting a home birth.

Just my 2 cents.
