are tests a requirement or for reassurance?

Hello,

We are currently ttc after miscarrying baby #1. I live in the UK. Here beta HCG are not done as routine but only when a problem is suspected. I was wondering the opinion of medical persons and women. Is the testing of beta hcg's required for any other reasoning or just for reassurance? should I be asking for betas when I concieve again? (they were done in my last pregnancy as a problem was highlighted due to bleeding). I asked my doctor if betas would be done with my next pregnancy, he said no as it causes undue stress and is of no benefit unless there is a problem. I am anxious to have any reassurance, your opinion is appreciated,

thanks alli
