Use of salicylic acid (beta-hydroxy acid) during pregnancy?

Is it safe to use salicylic acid, otherwise known as beta-hydroxy acid, on the skin during pregnancy? It is an ingredient often found in facial lotions and cleansers? Also, what about facial lotions that contain retinol? I know that is a derivative of vitamin A, and too much A during pregnancy is not recommeded. I guess my main question is: can things we put on our skin endanger our pregnancies?

I tried a search prior to posting this, but it did not return any matches.

Thank you for your time!
