I think he is talking about genetic testing for Tay-Sachs. This is a gene that is found mostly within the jewish population, but also in others such as irish. If both the man and the woman carry this gene, their child can have a 1 in 4 chance of being born with Tay-Sachs. This disease is a horrible life for a child who only lives until about 3 years old. Everyone, not just jews should be tested for this gene. If you don't carry it, you don't need to worry about your husband carrying it. They also test for 6 other genes as well such as cystic fibrosis. Every Ob/gyn in this country should be telling their patients to get genetic testing before concieving. You do not want to give birth to a Tay-Sachs baby and should you and your husband both carry the gene (which only happens in like every 200-300 couples), you would want to have an amnio or a CVS test once you are pregnant to see if the baby has Tay-Sachs.
