engagement and cervix questionFrom: jlee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 9 Aug 2001 10:51:28 -0500 (CDT)
I'm 38w2days pregnant with our second baby, and at my appointment on Tuesday the doctor said my baby had dropped, which made sense to me since my fundal height was lower than it was at my 36-wk appointment and I have been having tons of painful pressure in my lower back, abdomen, and groin area. However, my cervix is still pretty high/back. I thought that once the baby dropped, the cervix was supposed to be lower or easier to get to? I asked her again and she assured me that he has indeed dropped/engaged, but she was trying to reach in to strip my membranes and couldn't quite get that far because my cervix is so far back and she has short fingers. So she was only able to stretch my cervix a bit to try to get things going. Anyway, my questions are these: is it normal for the cervix to still be so far up after the baby has dropped? She felt the baby's head when she did my internal exam, but I guess I sometimes wonder if he's really engaged with my cervix being where it is. Second, with her trying to stretch and irritate my cervix to get things moving...if this were to really work to get my contractions to get regular, how long would it generally take it to work? It has been nearly 48 hours, and I've been doing lots of walking, and obviously have not had a baby yet! Thanks for answering my questions!
