Mona, A maternity table is a chiropractic adjusting table that has the capability to accommodate the abdomen of a pregnant patient. Some maternity tables separate a few inches in the middle. Others have a removable center section. Still others have a center section that can be lowered the requisite amount to meet the needs of the individual patient's abdomen. All types work fine to accommodate the patient's abdomen though my personal choice is the type that drops down since it tends to contour the patient's abdomen and provide additional support. Drop tables utilize Newton's First Law of Motion to reduce the force the doctor uses to deliver the adjustment. Most have 3-4 cushioned sections that are manually or electrically raised and lowered individually depending on which part of your spinal column or pelvis is being treated. Most drop tables are designed as maternity tables with a center section that can lower incrementally and contour the abdomen. The sections on a typical table only travel between 0.50 and 1.25 inches during the adjustment so you won't be launched into outer space or fall into a deep hole. As part of the education process all chiropractors are trained to care for pregnant patients. However, if your OB doctor does not have a chiropractor that he/she routinely works with you can call a few offices and locate one that routinely works with pregnant patients since their facilities and treatment methods will be more tailored to your specific 3rd trimester needs. I understand your confusion and concerns. Trepidation is normal when one enters an unknown situation. As a chiropractor I see and hear it on a daily basis. If you have any questions (or additional concerns) feel free to ask. I will be happy to provide you with any information I have available.
