bloody show, or just from exam?

I'm just over 37 weeks along with our second baby, and last night in the middle of the night I went to the bathroom and had lots of pink spotting along with large chunks of pinkish/reddish mucous blobs. I figure this is bloody show and I got very excited, but since I woke up the spotting and mucous discharge have turned to a pinkish brown. I have been losing mucous all week long, but it was clearish/cloudy/yellow. I did have an exam yesterday evening, which was done without any gel (a bit uncomfortable!) due to the fact that they were not sure whether or not my water had broken (it hadn't). I have had numerous internal exams -- due to preterm labor -- since 25 weeks into the pregnancy, and have never spotted the slightest bit with them. So this is completely new to me, and I'm wondering if this is indeed real bloody show and what that could mean in terms of impending labor. As of the exam last night, I was only 50% effaced and a fingertip dilated. Then I had lots of contractions the rest of the evening, passed the bloody mucous and spotting, and have been having irregular-but-painful contractions since, along with upset bowels and dry-heaving. Okay, so I'm hoping this is some sort of prelabor. ;-) But I was so sure yesterday evening that I wouldn't be going into labor anytime soon that I'm not sure what this is. Thanks! :)
