smokingFrom: sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 31 Jul 2001 21:31:34 -0500 (CDT)
I think that someone has misunderstood an answer to a question, I doubt that anyone would advocate smoking whilst pregnant, the facts are that smoking reduces birth weight, it has been linked to a higher rate of SIDS and lower I.Q. levels, higher incidence of miscarriage etc. but these are all difficult to demonstrate because other factors like genetics, environment and socio-economics enter into the equation. The facts are that through constriction of blood vessels and carbon monoxide in the blood stream there is oxygen deprivation to a degree in babies whose mothers smoke, oxygen is required in increasing amounts by the growing embryo, particularly for brain function so gets more important throughout pregnancy as the demands increase, however women ought to be in possesion of the facts, once they are it must be down to the individual.
