PO magnesuim citrate-malate for PT labor?From: erin (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 31 Jul 2001 20:42:59 -0500 (CDT)
HI! I have been on modified bedrest for preterm labor symptoms for 4 weeks. I am now 22 weeks. My cervix has changed to being anterior and soft, but is still long (6.1 cm at last US). My doc suggested starting nifedipine because of my amount of uterine acivity. It is my hope to avoid tocolytics, as long as I have no changes in my cervical length. As such, she suggested taking magnesuim citrate-malate cpsules 150mg (contains malic-acid 300mg) 4 times daily, with cutting back to 3 times if it gives me diarrhea. She said that this is an alternative to try over the standard tocolytics, and that it has worked to decrease uterine activity in some clients. I am on day 2 of this and the change is dramatic! I have only had 3 contractions today (that I can feel), compared to the countless numbers prior. I am having trouble finding any info about this supplement on the web. I just would like a second oppinion on the safety of taking this much PO mag, to baby and myself (one tab= 37.5% of DV). Have you ever seen this used? I am very happy with this treatment, as long as it is safe, as it appears to be working and no terb or nifetipine! Thank you for your reply!! Erin
