My friend, who is on the pill and in a stable relationship, recently skipped her period during the week she was due to menstruate. She says she missed a couple of pills in the packet by accident earlier this month. Also, around Christmas, she had to undergo surgery to remove a large ovarian cyst. Two home pregnancy tests have come up negative, but at the time of the tests she was only around one week late or less.

Could it be possible that she is pregnant or might her skipped period be related to the problem she had and/or the operation? (FYI, she tells me that her cycles have been fine since the operation until now.)

Second, if pregnant, what harm could she be doing to the fetus or her health by resuming to take the rest of the packet of birth-control pills?
