Miscarriage Questions

I recently had a missed miscarriage on 7/9. I had a D&C the following day. The sonogram showed a sac (?) of 8wk2d and a fetus of 7wk0d. Based on this and no heartbeat I was told I had miscarried. I was on progesterone supplements for the week prior based on a blood test confirming pregnancy that showed a level of 9000 HCG and 8.4 progesterone. My doc said that he was not convinced that the progesterone would do anything but that it couldn't hurt. My question is this: I have irregular periods anywhere from 31-40 days. I have no idea how I conceived or when exactly because of my irregularity and we were also using protection. I really did not think I was ovulating! Anyway, are going to try again after two cycles have passed and my doctor wants to do a endometrial biopsy for to see if I have luteal phase defect. Can you have this with such long and irregular cycles? If I do have this, is progesterone supp at ovulation the treatment and if it is how successful is it? I think that I probably conceived on a late ovulation, maybe 25 days into a cycle. Does this have any bearing on the miscarriage? I am concerned that I am ovulating infrequently and that although I was lucky the last time, that it will be hard to replicate. Do doctors prescribe Clomid when you have ovulated in the past but have irregular cycles? I think my main concern is that the irregular cycles may have contributed to the miscarriage, in which case I want to be proactive. No genetic testing was done on the fetus. Thanks in advance for your help and sorry for the long post!!
