PKU and aspartame in Yoplait Yogurt

I am 31 weeks pregnant...

I am curious about something and was hoping someone could share some insight about PKU and aspartame.

I have been put on a diet for one week because of gestational diabetes, then if my levels return to a normal range, I won't have to be put on insulin. (The same thing happened during my first pregnancy in 1998 and the diet worked. I have a healthy and happy 2 1/2 old son)

However, when I bought my Yogurt (Yoplait "Light") I noticed that it mentioned it contained Phenylalanine. I remebered something in my book "What To Expect When You're Expecting" about people with a condition called PKU "Phenylketonurics", and if not controled can cause problems in pregnancy, etc...

I guess my question to you is:

1. If I had this condition called PKU, would I already know? Can I be a carrier and not know it? Is it too late to find out? What are the symptoms?

2. Throughout my pregnancy I have had the regular Yoplait once a day sometimes, and don't even remember if it had aspartame in it. (the "light"kind does) Did I do anything wrong by consuming the Yogurt if it had aspartame in it?

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this subject. Thanks for always being there for me!

Sincerely,

Sweet Mama in Los Angeles
