The pain for all involved in unimagineable. Just hearing her story makes everyone sad. My little Zoe would have been 4 years old in a few days. She also died just before her due date. Mom's always worry that there might be something wrong with their babies, but never that they will end up with none to hold at all! No one talks much about stillbirths. That leave those that experience it so dumbfounded and lost. Let your friend know that there are lots and lots of babies up there with her. And please tell your friend that there is a little angel named Zoe by her side to show her around and that their birthdays are close together. Lori, find every opportunity to memorialize her little baby in speech and action. Most friends and relatives natural response is to try to put it behind them or not think about it just to make the pain go away. But the mom can't forget. It is all she will think about for a long while and her body is literally aching for her lost baby now. So, listen to her go over and over and over it. Say the baby's name in conversation and help think of ways to remember her. Above all, help her realize that she is, and always will be a mom from now on. One small comfort may be found in that she knows how it happend. This can save her a lot of feelings of guilt and anguish. It was just a horrible trick of nature. My prayers are surely with her and her family, and especially with the little baby that is missed.
