Incompetent Cervix, Cerclage, PROM and successful 2nd Pregnancy?????From: Shona (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 5 Jul 2001 06:02:23 -0500 (CDT)
With my first pregnancy I was dx with incompetent cervix at 18w. At 13w my cervix was 2.5cm in length, and at 18w I was 2.5cm dilated. An emergency Shirodkar cerclage was inserted and I went onto strict bedrest with toilet visits only. Given medication (Ipradol and Theodur - not sure what they contained) to stop contractions, and steroids from 26w (had 4 in total). No PTL symptoms or contractions at all but I PROMed at 27w6d, and my DD was born at 28w3d due to infection setting in. My DD is now 15mo and perfect, and we are thinking of trying again (have PCOS took 18mo last time), however I am terrified of the same thing happening again. My Regular OB just says 50/50 chance with a stitch at 13w, but says I will definately have another preemie and if I am lucky I might get to 32 weeks. He said that I must be prepared that I might need to go on full bedrest again from 6months, and that I will be on all the same medications again to stop contraction. This to me sounds like a bit excessive. Can you give me some advice as to what is the general course of treatment with someone with my history and realistically what are the chances of me having a normal FT pregnancy? I don't know if I can go through the stress of having a 28 weeker again. Thank you Regards Shona
